1992 is the year of the massacres, Palermo is stunned by pain and anger at the bombs that have snatched, from their loved ones and from our country, men and women of the institutions, magistrates, policemen, ordinary citizens. Names that we all know, that we will never tire of remembering.
Palermo reacts. Among the various forms of protest against mafia violence, one is particularly strong: for a month eleven women occupy Piazza Castelnuovo and hold a fasting relay. They meet, recognize each other and decide to do something extreme: give up food, get overwhelmed by hunger to denounce their "hunger for justice".
The strength of those women, their pride and their beauty, is testified by these portraits by Francesco Francaviglia. It's been 22 years but nothing of the temper and courage of those days has been in the least scratched by time. They are faces that it is nice to see again, looks that defy silence and fear.
Francesco Francaviglia
(Palermo, 1982) In 2006 he realized his first photographic project Terra Aria. In 2009, after winning a photography scholarship, he moved to Florence to attend the International School of Photography APAB. From 2010 to 2012 he was commissioned by Patrizia Stagnitta, to create a video on Sicilian poets, with music by Giovanni Sollima. He attended the European Institute of Design in Rome and Milan, where he furthered his interest in advertising and portrait photography. Between 2013 and 2014, in Palermo, he began working his project Le donne del digiuno. During the same period, invited by photographer Letizia Battaglia, he portrayed women writers, magistrates, sisters or mothers of the victims of the Mafia. He is currently working on a new project about Italian poets, and is creating portraits of judges, from Gian Carlo Caselli to Pietro Grasso, who have dealt with the major lawsuits against the Mafia in recent decades. He lives in Florence.
